Each year, the conference features a range of competitions and awards. Some of these are organised by the Hidden Earth team, whilst others are the responsibility of other groups and organisations. Scroll down to a brief summary of each competition on this page. Most competitions have more detailed information on separate pages. Some competitions have entry forms. You can also request a form on paper from our bookings office.
Prusik race, assault course (passing re-belays) tackle-bag stuffing and, in remembrance of pre-SRT days, a ladder climbing race. Men's and women's prizes in each category. Once again, these competitions are organised by Mark Wright Training, who will be offering the prize of an Industrial Rope Access Course worth over £550 to the overall winner. (Event will take place at announced times throughout the weekend, in the exhibition area).
We invite entries for our annual video media competition, on any aspect of caves, mines or potholes. The competition will cover any aspect of caves, mines or potholes. Entries will be screened at the conference and will be judged for their artistic, technical and aesthetic qualities with particular emphasis on artistic originality and innovation. Prizes will be awarded to the winners. The term 'video media' is intended to encompass all depictions of moving images and sequences of pictures.
The art competitionis organised for Hidden Earth by the International Society for Speleological Art. The competition is open to all forms of visual art, except photographs, including drawing, painting, print-making, sculpture and textiles relating to any aspect of caves and caving. Entries will be judged for their popular appeal by a ballot of conference delegates. Prizes will be awarded for the most popular piece of work and two runners-up. We also invite cartoon entries for a 'gallery of wit' . All those who venture into the realms of humorous drawings are invited to exhibit the product of their artistic imaginations. There will be a ballot, and a prize awarded to the most popular.
T-Shirts depicting caving scenes are now found in most cavers wardrobes. Bring along a T-Shirt that was designed for a club expedition or a special occasion and it may win a prize. The T-shirts will be displayed and all the conference delgates will be able to cast a vote. The winning design will receive a prize. T-Shirts should (ideally) be clean and, as they will be hung for viewing, please note that only one side of the shirt may be visible. Ask at the reception desk for the location of the display area. T-Shirts can be collected from the display area at the close of the conference.
Contestants, working in pairs, are required to survey a short, undulating course outside the conference building, The course will have previously been mapped out, and it has the same start and finish point. The survey data will be processed on a computer and the winners will be the couple who manages the loop with the smallest misclosure error. Easy! Some thought and care is needed however, as many of the courses in previous years have been affected by reinforcing rods in buildings, sign posts, etc.
A panel of judges will view the caving club stands and displays in the exhibition area, and will award a prize for the best. All bona-fide caving clubs and the BCRA's special interest groups are eligible for this award.
