Competitions and Awards

Each year, the conference features a range of competitions and awards. Some of these are organised by the Hidden Earth team, whilst others are the responsibility of other groups and organisations. Scroll down for a brief summary of each competition. Some competitions have more detailed information on separate pages.

See also 2008 prizewinners (PDF) and Sponsors. (2009 data will be added later)

The conference is also usually the place where the winners some national caving awards are announced. Due to a re-organisation of this web site, information on these national caving awards is currently not available, but you can read a summary of the awards on the BCRA web site.

Photo Salon Online Entry Form: We are offering online entry this year - it saves time at the check-in desk, and it means we do not have to decipher your handwriting. This facility will open in Summer 2010 and it will be available right up until the last moment before the conference. Go to hidden-earth.org.uk/competitions/online-entry

Photography

BCRA Photo Salon
For many years, the BCRA has organised an annual Photo Salon, which now takes place at Hidden Earth. The photo salon is managed, for BCRA, by the Cave Photography Group. The Photo Salon is a place where everyone from beginner to seasoned professional can display their photographs and have them judged in a number of different categories. We aim to encourage both new and experienced cave photographers to submit work covering all aspects of caving. The photographs will be judged on their technical, artistic and aesthetic qualities.

Video Media Salon

We invite entries for our annual video media competition, on any aspect of caves, mines or potholes. The competition will cover any aspect of caves, mines or potholes. Entries will be screened at the conference and will be judged for their artistic, technical and aesthetic qualities with particular emphasis on artistic originality and innovation. Prizes will be awarded to the winners. The term 'video media' is intended to encompass all depictions of moving images and sequences of pictures.

ISSA Art & Cartoon Salons

The art competitionis organised for Hidden Earth by theInternational Society for Speleological Art. The competition is open to all forms of visual art, except photographs, including drawing, painting, print-making, sculpture and textiles relating to any aspect of caves and caving. Entries will be judged for their popular appeal by a ballot of conference delegates. Prizes will be awarded for the most popular piece of work and two runners-up. We also invite cartoon entries for a 'gallery of wit' . All those who venture into the realms of humorous drawings are invited to exhibit the product of their artistic imaginations. There will be a ballot, and a prize awarded to the most popular.

Club T-shirt Design

T-Shirts depicting caving scenes are now found in most cavers wardrobes. Bring along a T-Shirt that was designed for a club expedition or a special occasion and it may win a prize. The T-shirts will be displayed and all the conference delgates will be able to cast a vote. The winning design will receive a prize. T-Shirts should (ideally) be clean and, as they will be hung for viewing, please note that only one side of the shirt may be visible. Ask at the reception desk for the location of the display area. T-Shirts can be collected from the display area at the close of the conference.

Cave Surveying

Contestants, working in pairs, are required to survey a short, undulating course outside the conference building, The course will have previously been mapped out, and it has the same start and finish point. The survey data will be processed on a computer and the winners will be the couple who manages the loop with the smallest misclosure error. Easy! Some thought and care is needed however, as many of the courses in previous years have been affected by reinforcing rods in buildings, sign posts, etc.

Best Club Stand

A panel of judges will view the caving club stands and displays in the exhibition area, and will award a prize for the best. All bona-fide caving clubs and the BCRA's special interest groups are eligible for this award.
